This is not just another video camera, the specs on the higher end sensors promise to rival those of current DSLRs. As with some other famous cameras (
Nikon D90, Canon 5D Mark II), digital stills and digital video are converging. The configurable system from RED is so different. The
RED Scarlet and RED Epic sensors can be combined and interchanged with different lens mounts, batteries, recording modules, lenses and so on. The idea is that the camera can be configured and tailored to your needs in many ways. What is more, as technology advances and new components become available, they will integrate into this system and users won't have to upgrade their entire cameras. On the
photography, I'm not sure how the specs / cost will compare with
DSLRs.
The higher-megapixel options are a lot more pricey than their DSLR counterparts. What we have here is the reverse of a camera like the 5D Mark II. RED's system will allow filmmakers to branch out into still photography where the Mark II will give photographers the option to try their hand at making some moving pictures.
RED Digital Cinema's modular Scarlet and Epic system lets hard-core A/V aficionados start with one of eight "brains"— boxes designed to house the image-processing hardware, the sensor, and the lens mount—and piece together the ideal high-end camcorder or camera from there. Swapping in new components instead of buying a new camera may save you money in the long term.
